Andrew This one is considered pretty slow but you're making a lot of progress. How is it so far?

I'm really enjoying it. I guess I'm not a good judge on what is slow. Things that other people think are slow I usually find quite interesting all the way through. So far this book has been like that for me. In terms of high fantasy I feel like the pacing has been just right. I went in expecting a lot of set up because of the genre. However, I even found the set up quite entertaining. It could be that I tend of like character driven narrative. As long as the characters are holding my attention and I care about them I don't worry so much about the pacing of the plot. Plot is important of course but as long as it's not truly dragging the story will keep my interest. The only thing about the book is that I really need to completely focus on it. Usually I can read things with music or background noise going on, but I can't do that with this book. That's fine though. :)

Andrew True, I forgot that you read Dumas, etc. for entertainment. Did you hear how Martin was inspired by this trilogy to do ASOIAF? (Not sure if you've read him, but if so you will see some overarching similarities in broad mythos and a few homages. The White Walkers in the books are similar to the Norns, though the show just made them mostly zombies.) I understand what you mean about needing to focus, this book particularly is written differently from Otherland or even the other two in the trilogy.
