Another great book that uses "I'd OF" instead of "I'd've". Yeah, a double contraction doesn't exist, but if it's in dialogue...that's just how people talk. But using OF instead of HAVE doesn't work. Editors, please do your jobs.

okay so..."They're not but squatters." In 1933, they would've been using "naught" which is a now-archaic term for "nothing". So the sentence would read as "They're nothing but squatters." And even though naught sounds like NOT, 'not' would be incorrect. It's google, people.
