Not a single book worth voting for in Fantasy choice awards. Second year in a row. Well done Goodreads. Some quality literature you promote.

Critical Sandwich not voting for a 3rd years in a row since it's a popularity contest

So true. I do not even bother to vote.

Exactly, same here. The Harry Potter script a couple of years ago was the last straw.

The democrat in me hoped that "every vote counts" but really. It doesn't.

Look no further than the resent Canadian elections to see why it does not (a lot of complicated reasons, but the idea it, half of the population in Quebec - the second most populous province - could had stayed home and the outcome would still be the same).

Sad Sunday (Books? Me?!? NEVER!!!) Amen sister. I voted for one book in the whole awards. Because it was the only one I read. Fantasy is a totally fucked up category - it's YA. And bad YA.

Exactly. It is like decent YA belongs to YA category and bad one is fantasy.

Mayim de Vries Sad, but I checked YA and it's even worse!

I usually consider myself to have good imagination, but in this case I miserably fail. Even worse???

Shane Findlay The choices are ridiculous and sadly risible. Not surprised though considering.....

Critical Sandwich I can't honestly even find a good YA book to read anymore. I want a good fantasy with decent, healthy, normal-paced romance line....
Three dark crowns with female-on-male rape was the last straw for me, and it's been a 1,5 ago since I've read it, have barely read YA since (unless it's old time favourites re-reads)
YA has become so horrible, so predictable, and has such cringy insta romances I don't even bother anymore

Critical Sandwich Harry Potter script, UGH I remember that one... how even?
i remember it having way more votes than people rating the book at the time

Anirudh A little Hatred

message 15: by Anirudh (new)

Anirudh A little hatred is not there anymore! Cassandra Claire makes it but not Lord Grimdark?! How the hell did that happen..

Critical Sandwich Many of books in "debute authors" section weren't actually written by debute authors
YA fantasy and real fantasy gets confused for so many years already
ya novels set in space take place of real sci-fi novels (not as much this year, but 1-3 years ago it's been huge)

just so many reasons not to vote, ever. it's a recurring pattern. GR team really need to moderate the votes and not let certain books enter the second round

Gavin I joined Goodreads around 2012 and in all my time here not a single decent book has won the regular fantasy award. I had absolutely nothing to vote for this year but I'm not even sure I can blame my fellow Goodreaders this time as 90% of all the new stuff being churned out by the big publishers has been awful lately. Hopefullly some of the big name fantasy authors release a book sometime in 2020 so I've got something I can vote for next year!

I agree, but at least there were always books in the final round to vote for. This time I see exactly nothing worth bothering.

You had something to vote for in the first round? It was a total bust from the get go for me. The sad thing is I looked through my year in books and could not even turn up a book worth writing in. Sad times! I had one book from all the categories combined that I could vote for in the first round. Yay for Dark Age!

The only book I voted for in the opening round was in Autobiography: Permanent Record (I wrote it in). For the rest it was so abysmal I saw people in a romance reading group complaining there were no decent romances in there.

I'll add Permanent Record to my to-read list. I'm not big on autobiographical stuff but it might be interesting to see what Snowden has to say about how his life has played out. Since this book picked up an English language publisher I'm not going to expect much in the way of big reveals in it.

If the comment sections on the internet have taught me anything it is that no matter what the topic there will be a whole bunch of people complaining about something. I guess Goodreads are between a rock and a hard place. Just wait until the Hugo award gets handed out next time. I'll be on a thread somewhere shitting all over that as well lol.

That's the spirit. I like your approach Gavin. Let's hope for a better future. :)

message 24: by Derpa (new)

Derpa Amen, I looked at the choices a few days ago and I wish I hadn't. If I remember correctly either last year or the year before the poetry category in specific was won by a book that had more votes than ratings on the site. POETRY. That you can read relatively fast, because it's not like doorstoppers with pages written completely full. But hey, it looked good because of... reasons? The author is on the list with the same gimmick this year, prepare for the brainless masses who can be bought with the same meaningless descriptor once again.

message 25: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Yup, yet again this Fantasy reader has nothing there to vote for. Same for the other categories I read. None of my write in votes made it in.

message 26: by Sean (new)

Sean Newgent This website seems to be run a lot by the YA crowd from my delving into certain areas of the fantasy genre. YA infecting adult fantasy fiction is getting to be a problem, especially given that many YA authors are not very good *cough* A Darker Shade of Magic *cough*

message 27: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries If A Darker Shade of Magic is involved then I might delve O.P. not a tough but a serious case of bronchitis.
