I think how lonely it must be for someone who has seen so many of their loved ones die. To watch slowly as everything you know and love comes to an end, to be the audience to your own and others' tragedies. In a way, I was lucky. I had never really grown to love that many people. I would make friends, I would meet people, but for the most part I would always be alone.

That's sad.

A strange reading experience that is getting stranger still, as the narrator is completely losing his mind. Honestly, I love it.

Randomly approached by a stranger on the bus:

...someone taps me on the shoulder. It's the obasan, again. She smiles at me. Her warm smile portends terrible things.
"Where are you from?" she asks in fairly good English.
"America," I reply.
"How do you like Japan?"
"It's great." She claps her hands in delight.
"Do you like natto?"

Uhm, sure, who doesn't like Nattō?!

"Have you seen my hanko?" the Welshman interjects suddenly finding his way toward the beer cooler. "I've been looking for mine for ages now."
I found one in between the couch cushions the other day, but I can't read any Japanese so I don't know whether it's yours or mine. I just put it right back into the couch in case either of us needs to find it later."
"Smart move," the Welshman says.

Indeed. Lol.
