I think I'm done with this. The writing isn't making me care about Asurek's back story because I don't even know who he is as a character in the present. Just dumping a load of backstory right at the beginning does not make me want to keep reading.

Almost 20% in and I'm only on chapter 3. 1st chapter was a pretty great intro, set the world and characters up well with some mystery to keep me hooked. 2 & 3 are just flashbacks for the character's backstory, which makes me want to DNF. I don't care about the characters because they haven't DONE anything yet. You can't just dump backstory and expect me to care right away. It has killed the pacing.
