I thought the 'fall' discussed with the 1953 American K2 attempt was the same referenced in Into Thin Air.
Having read that book and knowing the events of the 1996 Everest Disaster it's interesting that the Belay is given so little emphasis here - granted the intention of this book is to tell the story of K2 itself not the climbers, but even so.
