In Smile, 1 symbolic archetype used in this story is light and dark. Towards the end of the book when Raina, the main character starts to break apart from her old friend group you can see that she is always wearing bright and vibrant clothing while her friends start to wear dark and mysterious clothing. This symbolizes who is good and who is bad in the story

An allusion in the book smile I noticed is when the main character, Raina said “she was as good as a friend as the 49ers were good at football. This is an allusion to the San Francisco 49ers football team. Based on the time period of this book, the 49ers were really bad so that means the she was a terrible friend.
