The protagonists' paths have finally crossed.

The classic fantasy quest/coming-of-age "guide" who spends lots of time deliberately telling the character nothing useful, although they totally could.

So far this is really reminding me of the Dragonlance type novels of my youth: mages, evil lords, elves, dragons, familiars, magical jewels. Everyone who could be happy loses their love to death or dies tragically and heroically. Redheads are special, dreams are portent-laden, poetry is needlessly recited.
