The difference which seems to come to the front in the first discussion between René Girard and Gianni Vattimo is that Vattimo regards the question of 'truth' inferior to the love proclaimed by christianity while Girard says those must coincide. This discussion came up because Girard is a christian in the 'classical' sense; he sees the church as the salvation of the people in a sense. Vattimo sees it as authoritarian

The final chapter of the book is an essay by Girard. He wants to explain why he maintains the orthodox position of the regarding the christian way of looking at the world, that is the biblical, is the true position. This true position may even be scientifically proven. He distances himself from Vattimo in the sense that Girard doesn't want to abstain from saying the gospels as the truth.

The fourth chapter of the book is an essay by Gianni Vattimo himself. He tries to connect the thought of Girard and Heidegger throught the notion of Being as a principle of weakening, not unlike Mark C. Taylor's concept of 'erring'. Vattimo distances his own thought from Girard's when discussing Girard's concept of revelation: salvation occurs when the choice is made between apocalypse (violence) or charity.

In the third chapter Heidegger is discussed. While René Girard puts out some very interesting statements, the form of a discussion prevents a fruitful philosophical argumentation with or against him. The matter discussed is left because of public questions and led into a directions which seems a bit disconnected from the theme of the first two dialogues sadly. Also Girard seems to contradict some of his earlier words.

This second chapter, another dialogue between the two men is a lot less coherent. Girard doesn't seem to take the time to listen to and react on the arguments Vattimo puts forward, sometimes even ridiculing them. The subject seems a continuation of the previous chapter. Relativism as openness or as nihilism.
