How do we get seven hours? They originated from careful reading of Scripture and from tradition. Psalm 119 (verse 164) states "Seven times a day I will praise you." ... Saint Benedict, the great monastic founder, wanted his monks to pray seven hour daily, to correspond with scripture. He called the seven hours of prayer the "opus Dei," the work of God.
