This reminds me of James Herriot; the same mixture of the narrator's incompetence compared to the locals, versus the locals' humorous habits and amusing moments of ignorance where modern life is concerned.
It took me a long time to work out that 'Miss Peckwitt' was the author's name pronounced in a Gaelic accent... and that 'Becky' was likewise a schoolyard nickname rather than her actual Christian name!
