I'm wondering what Krumgold is getting at. Mr. Larkin just gave a speech complaining that a community where the men are away at work is a matriarchy, Henry Lovring, Jr. is ex-military and likes it when Henry fights Fletcher, and Henry 3 is quite athletic despite a high I.Q. I hope this doesn't end up a paean to machismo.

The bomb shelter dates the book, but the fickle shifts in attitude don't. Maybe they really did blow a gasket though, since, like I said, they were running up the odometer without actually going anywhere.

I think Henry is confusing the odometer and the speedometer. I think they're going to burn out the engine the way they're running the car on cinder blocks until they can drive legally. The cover art drew me to the book when I saw it on the rack at Strand, but there's a goof. The text says the X15 is a four-door sedan, but the illustration clearly shows a coupe, and a bubbly-looking coupe at that.

Henry talking about Jack Lemmon junior executive types makes it sound like his parents let him watch The Apartment and that he would have been interested.
