Readers of fiction should always find themselves reading essays and reviews and interviews by writers of fiction. That's what I say. Gil warms my heart.

Finally a poet he don't like. Marianne Moore he identifies along with Frost and Sandburg as poets who "are almost wholly ignorant of the reality of living in this country."

Not to forget that Gil was also a poet. I sort of wish he hadn't been. His pieces on poets in this volume will be much more valuable to readers of poetry than they are to me.

A few pieces here on Hubert Selby's fiction. I only know the film of Last Exit, but it's enough to orient myself to what Gil's got to say about Selby; and then there are the goodreads Selby readers you oughta pay some attention to, too.

I've read basically all of Something Said, never rated or reviewed it, but it is a damn fine collection of writing.
Every Sorrentino apart from Blue Pastoral is winwinwin. Since no one ever does, start with Crystal Vision.
MJ wrote: "Every Sorrentino apart from Blue Pastoral is winwinwin."Indeed. Blue Pastoral is an anomaly. It is a finnfinnfinnfinn (that's 4x the funfunfun).
I think Crystal is my next-on-deck ("next-on" because I don't trust "on deck" to sufficient convey the thought of "next") Gilbook, because it's in a beautiful hd. I don't know where it is right now, but it's somewhere in these stacks to my left.
[edit: just found it. The very nearest stack to my left, on the absolute bottom of it. Which places it very near and very far. Just above it are the aforementioned Blue and Stew. (You won't believe this, but the Belch is resting atop Red the Fiend and is being crushed by Moby-Dick which in turn is floating Alex's Estonia book. Fascinating how books hold each other up in turn.)]
Are you a fan of The Believer periodical? They have so many great essays, reviews, interviews. Like this one (Eggars/DFW in 2003):http://www.believermag.com/issues/200...

Also, but until recent years I've not done any keeping up with currents of literature, spending much of my time with the stuff at least a generation old enough to be found second-hand etc. This thing about keeping up with the latest thing, well, it's been rough on the pocketbook.
