This book should really be called Empire and African-American Religions. The author tracks a notion of freedom, a secretion from colonial christianization, thru African-American history – an ambivalent, colonizing impulse that leads to, for ex. the creation of Liberia. This is not a history of Black belief systems! It's a (almost realpolitik) attempt to portray the entanglement of religion, colonialism, and race. FYI
