It's interesting how Conroy is a bit of a sage in these books. More worldly and cynical than the more romantic Vic. His behaviour at the New Year's Eve party is quite instructive, and I enjoyed his (somewhat unreconstructed) thoughts on homosexuality. Overall though he can clearly see things that Vic can only vaguely sense, with Vic's attraction to Donna doubtless to be a case in point

Nothing much has changed since the end of A Kind Of Loving until an increasingly fragile Mr Van Huyten dies suddenly. He hasn't left the shop to Vic which means a sudden change of circumstances for Vic. Coincidentally Albert Conroy offers him a job possibility down South - in Essex
