There's something about this book that's making me feel unmoored from the story. I think the whole thing is too in medias res for my tastes--most of the characters know each other already and there's this big historical back story. I know a fantasy trend is to ditch the infodump and start as close to the action as possible, but I think it's possible to start too far into a story, and Mageborn strikes me in that way.
