Even better the second time through. The lightyears separating this novel from basically everything else that finds its way into print in these benighted times remind me just how fucking LUCKY we are to have this novel.

- All action in this novel is o'ershadowed by the doings of the ancients.

- Money, especially coinage is a significant leitmotif.

- I cannot imagine a prose as out of step with its time as this--making it all the more sumptuous, delicate, and delicious.
