I would really appreciate more about the villainy & less about Alison's repeated (& unsuccessful) attempts to escape the house. What are these people doing? How are they doing it? Instead the story putters along with yet another escape that ends in her being brought back & sassing her captors. Zzz.

'Even this distance out to sea, for some inexplicable reason she still could not feel entirely free of the house. From where it stood high on the rock, solitary & forbidding, filled to its eaves w/ a peculiar evil all its own, inhabited person for person by the strangest group of people she had ever met in her life, it seemed to reach out to her w/ invisible tendrils touching her & starting her skin crawling.'

--"He was hanged, you know."
--"Mr Barringer?"
--"Captain Barringer. It's said he murdered his mistress in cold blood, cut her to pieces & flung them to the sharks. She was unfaithful to him. Portuguese she was, & beautiful."
--"You heard..."
--"I saw. To this day her picture hangs above the fireplace downstairs."
....Classy. :D

'His surprise appearance changed nothing between them. The abyss had been cut, wide & deep, & there would be no bridging it. If she was to be ridiculed because she had associated herself w/ a man who held her in such obvious low esteem, breaking w/ him only to resume the alliance at a later date begged more than ridicule, more than scorn.'
