Parts of "Chains of the Sea" were absolutely unbearable. The fatphobia and "frigid woman" stereotypes were in full effect. The long, boring descriptions of nature and government reactions to the invasion dragged. I will say it was effective at creating a bleak, foreboding mood, and I ended up feeling pretty bad for Tommy. All the adults in his life are terrible and then he has to face another, final betrayal.

The first novella "And Us, Too, I Guess" was a surprisingly good disaster story about a mysterious plague where a random species starts dying out every day. It alternates between the perspectives of 2 scientists/colleagues and an unhappily married couple.
