There are these hints of really cool fantasy stuff (like one of the MCs can only talk with animals and not humans, and the ever-imposing threat of the Dragon), but I don't trust the author to go beyond politics and sex. I read she mainly writes historical fiction, so I can totally understand sticking to what she knows and putting the sff elements on a backburner. I'll be pleasantly surprised if I'm wrong.
Her sci-fi Floating Worlds was really nuanced and fascinating...and contained some problematic elements. So I kept this one on my radar, but I'm not hearing the same nuance Floating Worlds had, so, mrph.
