What's with this guy? I'm only around 20 pages into it, and already it's filled with long footnotes, and passages like this:

Writers of English-language books should no more assume familiarity with Spanish than they do with Farsi. I want to read it, but may give up.

OK, the Spanglish is still a bit irritating, but what's emerging is an incredibly well-written story, it's worth the trouble. Sticking with it.
