While it's a bit of a nice departure from other fantasy I've read, I'm finding the two 'protagonists' to be rather less than charismatic. They don't seem that well fleshed out, and I find the supporting characters to be either irritating, vanilla or one-dimensional.
It's not terrible, but it is not gripping me like I'd hoped it would, based upon others' reviews.

I was about to give up on this book, but wondered if I was missing out on something. It got rave reviews from the bookstore staff, and I see how highly rated it is here. It's quite unlike other fantasy I have read, and this is a positive thing, not a negative.
I like Temrai and Bardas, and you really don't get a sense of the potential of this rivalry until very late in the book.Hooked now!

"If there's one thing I despise almost as much as amateurs, it's melodrama."
