The Art of Describing is somewhat 'dense' in form but what Svetlana Alpers seems to be achieving through this book is extremely potent. In going into detailed histories on the early scientific research on optics Svetlana offers up an interesting argument on the difference in form, function and meaning between the Italian and Dutch perspectives on painting.
