“You’re so the s#it, Ace. I love you.” “I love you back.” Smiling against his mouth, she sank into the kiss, into his embrace. This new chapter of their lives was already off to a thrilling—if a little terrifying—start. She couldn’t wait to find out what exciting possibilities the future had in store for them.

“I could have lost you tonight. Until we talked earlier I never realized how much I’ve been taking you for granted, even though I didn’t mean to. I don’t ever want you to think I don’t love you or appreciate every single thing you do for us, whether I’m here or away.”

A staggering wave of relief hit him, then she gave a little smile and started toward him. He met her halfway and caught her around the back in a tight, one-armed hug, careful not to touch her wound. “Sweetheart, you okay?” He buried his sweaty face in her hair, breathing her in. She was safe. That was all that mattered.

On their way to the elevator a door opened behind them. Candace looked back to find Maya and Jackson hurrying after them. Maya was tying the sash on her robe tighter, her hair was mussed, and her lipstick was gone. Her blue-green eyes shot sparks at Candace as she strode toward them. “This better be damn important, Ace.”

“You make me feel completely alone, like you don’t care about my feelings or what I’m going through. Do you know what that’s like? To not be able to depend on the person you love the most?” Her words slashed at him like knives. God, he’d had no idea she felt this way.

Maya and Jackson were waiting there with Erin and Wade. He’d served overseas with Jackson but didn’t know Wade that well. Ryan liked the former spook well enough, though, and Wade was good to Erin, so he was glad he’d been able to make it here for their wedding.

“Bah. I’d rather go drinking and shooting with the men anytime.” Yeah, because the guys would love to have her high-functioning alcoholic grandmother running around with loaded firearms in the middle of their bachelor party. Good God, Grandma really was terrifying sometimes.
