Partial reread, starting at about 40%. I just wanted to reread an angsty scene for some reason and that launched into torturing myself with a bunch of angst all day. I really need Dal Maclean to write more books (without infidelity, please, I beg) because I love her writing and find her stories absorbing, but this one wrecks me.

While that ending was mostly pretty satisfying (aside from Steggie being the murderer and killing himself. Which I will always hold a grudge about, even know that ending going into this) I still need more from Ben. As in, more even than what I remember in his cameo in the sequel. Book 3 better deliver.

Jamie was lovely though and honestly he seemed kind of demi?? Bless

More than that, Ben had become unnervingly eager to make a commitment, tie James down somehow. And buying a house together would be quite a big one. And getting a dog. Ben had been pushing hard for a dog he’d already named Ozzy.

On one hand, at least these two are having it out now with all the cards (mostly) on the table. One the other hand... there’s less than 8% of this book left and I genuinely don’t see how the HFN/HEA will seem substantial, much less plausible.

Weird that two books in this series heavily hinge upon both romantic infidelity in one of the leads AND one of the leads eventually suspecting the other lead of being a murderer after they become romantically involved

Fucking Ben making me soften towards him over how much he loved his childhood dog and how he wouldn’t tell anyone, including Jamie, his name b/c he meant too much, until now.

Seriously having a hard time not wanting Ben to suffer twice as much as Jamie with all this. The writing is stellar but HOW is this categorized as romance???

Even knowing how this ends (thank you reviews that contain spoilers, as I hate being blindsided by this stuff), my stomach still keeps plunging each time Ben sleeps with someone else or blows Jamie off. Killing me.
