The dialogue is what I would call novice level, which is unfortunate. I don't mind lower level sentence structure, but it is at odds with the murdered children aspects of the plot. These characters lack depth. They are flat versions of the characters I'd hope for. I am hopping they improve.

I am listening to it right now. I can tell without seeing the words that it needed a Content editor badly. I'm willing to assume that, as his first novel, he didn't have the resources necessary for this. I'm hoping the writing improves over the course of the books. This genre is apropos for this pandemic!
