Movie poster homage: The Wizard of Oz (left), Supergirl #40 (right)

Notes:
(1) Last volume was technically a complete arc, but was caught in the crossfire of at least two events and three crossovers. A sad fate for all Superman family titles.
(2) I don't expect much from this book. I mean, it wasn't just cancelled after this for no reason.

Notes:
(1) Supergirl going to a kind of superhero Hogwarts is a decent idea on paper. Too bad it's so paint-by-numbers and bland.
(2) I really enjoy Emanuela Lupacchino's art. She's like if Terry Dodson still did interior art for mainstream comics, and not just covers.
(3) Best part of this arc so far is Kara working as a barista and screwing up.

Notes:
(1) Ugh, Kara's boyfriend's so boring! I so want to slap some personality into his boring face.
(2) Kara's hair is long one issue, then short, then long again. Editorial, get it together!
(3) When did Red Hood gain super strength and fight Supergirl on Warworld? So confused.
(4) I totally ship Kara and Jason. They can be angsty together :)

Sophia I love these homages! It shows that different mediums feed off each other and can inspire some pretty cool imagery.

I agree! I think these sorts of variant covers are much more interesting and fun than other themes like selfies, monsters, cats or steampunk. As you say, it links the different mediums by common themes. Supergirl, like Dorothy, was blown away from her home and finds herself in a strange fantasy world of metahumans and monsters.

By the way, I updated the previous post with other movie homages I'd posted previously, in case you'd like to take a look :)

Exactly! Plus with a homage of something you really love, it adds that little bit of sentimentality. For example with the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone homage.

Awesome! They all look cool but I think my favourites are Wonder Woman and Aquaman :D

I always enjoy posting these kind of side-by-side examples of art. I think it's fun and really does show off art styles and accentuates why images are iconic. Whenever I spot one of these movie homages or a take on a previous cover by another artist I always enjoy sharing them :)

I think the Wonder Woman one's the most seamless. The film's based on a comic, so it already has that aesthetic to it. I think my favorite's the Harry Potter one, just because it's the most detailed. It's fun to see who's in place of who and what all the differences are with the original.

It really is fun and quirky! I love the different art style ones like when the original is a western comic book style but then it's been redone in a manga style. I find that so cool and utterly beautiful to look at!

I've noticed that a lot of X-Men covers are homaged later one. For example X-Men #139 (view spoiler)
and Uncanny X-Men #171 (view spoiler)
(which is more the tagline than the drawing tbh).
I just found this one that's cross-company with Action Comics #1 (view spoiler)
and Amazing Spider-Man #306! (view spoiler)

Oh if we're including the Harry Potter one then that's definitely my fav! I think the Bat family is my favourite (out of the DC families). So many different layers and personalities.

That's very interesting to see. Thanks for sharing! I noticed the signature on the Spider-Man cover says "McFarlane after Siegel + Shuster." Every time I see an "after" in the signature, I'll always make it a point to hunt down the original it's based on.

Probably my favorite homage cover was really unexpected, it's Jon Romita Jr.'s Kick-Ass cover after Frank Quitely's Batman and Robin #1. I say unexpected because older artists rarely ever pay homage to younger artists. The Batman and Robin cover is the wallpaper on my phone :)

I didn't even notice that! I'll be more mindful of that, thanks :)

Both covers are beautiful! What I like about this homage is that the artist didn't make it look exactly like the original.
That's a shame! I'm glad someone broke that. I have so many textless covers on my phone it's ridiculous! I am constantly changing my background because of that lol

I agree. it's not a slavish copy, it's similar enough that you know exactly what the artist's going for, but with space to impart personality and be reflective of the mood of the particular book.

That one's been on my phone for years. I think it might be time for a change. I'll probably follow your lead and switch them often, at least until a new favorite emerges :)

Exactly! It's like an art project in high school. You're all given one topic but it can be taken in so many different ways :)

Definitely time for a change! Backgrounds can get boring, you need a new one every now and again to keep it interesting :D

Just changed it right now. Looks so weird having a new lock-screen wallpaper after so long using the same one. I wish my phone had an option to cycle through a number of them instead of having to change them manually. Anyway, I'll follow your advice and shake things up periodically 😁👍
