"He's the only man I ever loved. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt."

"Zora, what benefit of what doubt?" Karen retorted. "He dumped you in high school, married someone else, then cheated on HER with you after he ran into you at your class reunion. Let's not forget that he then cheated on YOU with what's-her-name from Hong Kong. Why on earth would you entertain the fantastical notion that Andrew will

"You never talk to me anymore."....

"Why should I? So you can critique my behavior and complain about how stupid I am?" she demanded.

"Of course not... I'd merely advise and counsel you."

"Same difference."

Oh, yeah, bossy men who try to control your life and tell you what to do, and if you don't listen to them they call you stupid. So hot. Oh baby. /s

Tells her how to run her life. Says it's for 'her own good.' It's none of his fucking business. I can't stand this guy.

"The auto club could take half an hour," Keely responded tartly to Zora. "Meanwhile you're breathing auto fumes. It's bad for the baby."

"She doesn't always exercise the best judgment," Lucky agreed.

FUCK YOU, LUCKY

He wasn't her type. Too rough around the edges and too judgmental. Still, the way he'd stood by her these past months had been more than kind. It had been... fatherly.

Oh, gross, excuse me while I vomit

"It's important to respect her choices," Edmond said.

"Even if you disagree with them?"

"Especially if you disagree with them." Thoughtfully, the lawyer added, "And especially when she's the person who has to deal with the consequences."

"But Zora keeps repeating the same boneheaded mistakes," Lucky protested.

"I'll share it on one condition." She might as well benefit from this.

"Which is?"

"You stop nagging me about my personal choices, however stupid you may consider them."

Zora hated to depend on others, especially someone so controlling and critical and arrogant and judgmental.

Inviting Betsy Raditch had seemed a clever trick to prod Zora into finally accepting the help she needed.

You're shit.

Mir I wonder if there's a "romance with sensible characters" list somewhere?

Mir (What was the first search return for this query? "Best Books With Hot Violent Sociopathic Heros" O_O)

Carmen Mir wrote: "I wonder if there's a "romance with sensible characters" list somewhere?"

LOL Maybe. I never looked.

I don't find violent sociopaths to be hot. I think I'll avoid those. LOL

Mir Right? I mean, I get that people have fantasies that don't reflect real-life desires, but I'm surprised that enough people think "I'm into violent sociopaths" for that to be a list topic.

I'm not. You wouldn't BELIEVE some of these romance 'heroes.' o.O Really scary.

Wastrel It's amazing/disturbing how hot people find serial killers, let alone "acts like a serial killer but doesn't actually kill anyone so it's OK" characters.

Currently the (inter?)national obsession du jour is Killing Eve, which is apparently feminist and empowering and radical and different... because this time, the abusive serial killer who torments and assaults their female "love interest" is a woman!

And isn't there a serial killer romcom on at the moment too? [oh, that reminds me, I against my better judgement watched two seasons of a serial killer romance show (honestly not sure why... I give things the benefit of the doubt, and then I feel i have to watch the whole thing out of completism)... it got much better as they moved away from the book, but the initial couple of episodes, based more on the novels, were seriously disturbing in their misogyny-dressed-up-as-empowering-romance (the heroine has screwed her life up, and only being controlled and abused by a serial killer can save her, etc).]

There's a really deep underbelly of totally-fucked-up that passes for mainstream entertainment these days. In some ways, I kind of feel that the old overtly-sexist stories may be healthier: you can see immediately how sexist they are and rebel against them. The new type seems more insidious...

Great analysis, Wastrel, and I agree with you about the creepiness factor. Definitely not my cup of tea.

That's a good point. I remember reading/viewing my first couple romances as a teen and thinking, "What a sexist load of crap!" and avoiding the genre for several year. It's harder to reject something if you can't quite pin down what's objectionable about it.

The genre still really struggles with sexist garbage. I doubt it will ever be free of it. Still, things have gotten a bit better IMO.
