I've had this Library of America edition on my bookshelf forever and never even opened it. No, I'm not reading four novels. Just The Custom of the Country, number 3 of 4.

Within 150 pp of the end of THE CUSTOM OF THE COUNTRY. Finally, I'm taking some cheer in the possibility of a character's comeuppance. I mean, if there's any justice in the world (and there seldom is).

I'm about halfway through The Custom of the Country, soldiering on despite a character who is really difficult to abide. I know, I know. That's no reason to fault a book. Still, human nature is human nature.

Jan I love, love, love Edith Wharton's works. I hope you enjoy these. (I haven't read "The Custom of the Country" yet. It was one of the two I continued to switch between when we were voting.)

Ken Thanks for the encouragement, Jan and Whit. The first three chapters went down easily, though the book seems to come from a distant land and a distant time.
