Emily St. John Mandel has moved to the top of my list of favorite authors, the rarified territory of writers whose books I’ll buy in hardcover without even needing to know what the books are about. Like her previous novels, this one defies easy description. It’s also probably the best book I’ve read all year. Astonishingly good.
