WoW! Such a furious violent start of a story. I'm propelled back in time to Shanghai of the 1930's and it's not exactly a cozy place.

"The beautiful girl in Marseille whose hair had the perfume of fried eel and sweet fennel".. These are the best parts of the book. Other than that it is communists and reactionary gangs killing each other, seasoned with canorous french names of places and streets. Not enough for a good novel! Grr.. I'm pushing through..

Not much going on aside from crooks and gals, sex and violence. The main characters stay somewhat sterotype - nondescribt. Reading is a bit of a drag right now.

A belarusian Lady who deals in arms and jewellery, her younger lover, a press photographer, cigarettes and sex, treason, communists and assassins - what a way to live and to die. Shanghai's french concession of the 1930s provides a stunning backdrop for the chaotic events. Breathtaking .. and a little hard to follow.
