If anyone has read this, I’d love to discuss it and pick your brain. I picked up this book because after reading “The Alchemist” I was not as enamored as everyone else seems to be. I thought I’d give Coelho another try but I’m finding the same struggle— I agree with what I think he’s trying to say, but I find the presentation problematic. I’ll add more explanation in the comments.

Hayley On the surface, The Alchemist’s moral that if you want something badly enough all the universe will conspire to make it happen is a nice message about following your dreams; on the other hand, I feel like it also carries a message of entitlement.

In the case of this book I’m finding a similar struggle— the emphasis on the power of love is beautiful, but some of the ways Elijah approaches his mission do not indicate love to me. I might only feel that way because I am not overly familiar with the Bible/Torah, or because I tend to have similar conflicted feelings about religious texts in general.

Hayley I don’t know y’all— any Coelho fans want to jump in? Give an alternate perspective? I’m open!
