Did a wee search. Apparently ThriftBooks isn't part of the Amazon capitalist universe. Their wiki makes them sound slightly spooky though: "ThriftBooks' business model "is based on achieving economies of scale through automation"."
Alibris and BookOutlet too. I've been trapped in the Amazon hellscape for too long. I should get out too.
Better World Books sounds cute: "Better World Books' used book inventory comes primarily from regular book drives at over 1,800 colleges and universities and donations from over 3,000 library systems, in addition to donation boxes found on corners and on college campuses.""On November 6, 2019, Better World Books was acquired by Better World Libraries, a mission-aligned, not-for-profit organization that is affiliated with longtime partner, the Internet Archive."
ive been using thriftbooks but sometimes the shipping takes a longgg time as im in canada but i see that bookoutlet has a .ca url !! this might be my savior if the selection is right..but yeah im trying to avoid any amaz0n owned thing but idk if its possible for me to cut out the websites that they host with their servers bc thats like everything
Hi, I'm very behind and just read your question. :)I use AbeBooks, where I buy almost all my books, secondhand (or very often twentieth-hand when they're Victorian editions). It's a marketplace for small, independent bookshops.
I read somewhere that Amazon has a stake in the company now regrettably, but even so, the lion's share of the book price goes to the indie bookshop, which pays its taxes (unlike Amazon).
https://www.abebooks.co.uk/
I also use the following bookshops, many of whom will naturally deliver internationally, so I'll post the info here just in case it's of any use or interest:
https://persephonebooks.co.uk/
https://www.foyles.co.uk/
https://www.londonreviewbookshop.co.uk/
I know that all might be too country-specific, but hope it might be interesting! Ray.
