We see the evolution of Bolo becoming the village terror and the sequence of events that led up to it. The narrator reminds the reader that the community of which he is a part of has a role to play in his unruly behavior despite them not wanting to take any responsibility for his unravelling

In Ch.7 Bolo returns to the village and what would have been a gradual imperceptible change for those not in jail was a stark contrast perceived by the recently released Bolo. The village he once knew is gone along with the younger generation and the culture of stick fighting

Eva tries her best to juggle the many responsibilities of being a supportive wife to Bee who's struggling to assertive his masculine power over his destiny, a nurturing mother wants to set her children up for a better life that she and Bee can provide and as a Baptist who is struggling to find vigor in the Christianity faith that is forced upon her to assume as her own.

In the first 50 pages the reader understands the importance of education and religion and how colonialism weaponized them to advance their own interests at the expense of the locals
