“We’re not free. We’re still dancing to someone else’s tune,” Alice said, but softly.

“Thorns pricked at her skin everywhere, poked at her face and hands and the top of her head and wormed through her jackets and pants. She thought Hatcher yelled her name but she couldn’t tell, for roses were in her ears and her nose and under her eyelids, crawling inside her. She opened her mouth to scream and roses pushed their way inside, choking her.”

“I know many things, Nicholas, grandson of Bess Carbey. I know things you yourself do not know.”

”You’ll wish you were dead,” he said.
“I remember,” she said, her voice faint. “I remember wishing that. I’ll stay close, and I won’t be a mouse. I’ll be your brother.”

“”Start by holding your head high,” Hatcher said. “You’re only a mouse if you let them make you one.””

“The two of you,” Bess tutted as Alice wrenched away from her. “Falling all over the place, both of you. I don’t know how you’ll get by if you’re fainting all the time”

I know I shouldn’t laugh at this but I can’t help myself

I’m expecting this to be super creepy and I hope that it won’t disappoint me
