This is turning out to be a really good fun adventure story in a light / comfort reading sort of way. And my knowledge of early modern Persian technology is so low that I'm basically reading it as fantasy - it's a quest story with that sort of feel. Though one review did check the detail & say it was historically sound.

This, at least, is hardly likely to be short of a sense of humour.
