4. Similarly for healthcare, even when it's affordable the poor are ill-informed or trapped in false beliefs.
There are a number of problems which can be solved pretty easily and without much expense - iodine and iron in food, chlorinated water to prevent diarrhoea, vaccination and immunization, etc. But these low hanging fruits don't reach the people due to lack of information and proper incentives and nudges.

It is important to note that the rich or privileged people are also ill-informed to the same extent as the poor. The difference is just that the rich are surrounded by invisible nudges - private doctors who give better advice, clean water, immunization and vaccination by schools or local community camps. We don't have to make a choice.
The first step is to understand poverty is to understand how the poor think.

A few pointers from the first 3 chapters:
1. There are two ways poor people are stuck in poverty trap - food and healthcare.
2. It's not that there is a scarcity of food or that the healthcare system is not affordable.
3. The poor usually eat less calorific food and when given a raise in income, they eat more expensive food, not the more calorific.

It is a common belief that anecdotal pieces of evidence are not enough to look at a problem from a macroscopic view and in turn solve them. And this goes for poverty too. Until you read Poor Economics.
To understand poverty, you need to delve deeper into the lives of people who experience it and understand why do they make the decisions they make. This book essentially does that.
