This book focuses primarily on the 80s and the upper class nearly unaffected by the political unrest, sending their children to boarding school, one in Connecticut which I likely recently worked at. It is strange to both read my country’s history in this novel and have it be so far removed from my own and family’s experience of those years. The patriotic paternalism is the novel’s clearest attribute.
