I may have underestimated this male author a bit. He can't know the actuality of living it, just as I can't. No one without that kind of scar can begin to comprehend daily life, walking through it. But here, almost to the hopefully happy ending, I see a tender-hearted warrior man who truly feels compassion, love, admiration, and understanding that he can't understand even while the bit he glimpses astounds him.

Having a man write the story of a scrappy and fierce heroine with a horror in her past doesn't quite work in some ways. On one hand, he can't possibly understand the feelings and fear a woman would have with abuse from her childhood haunting every thought. But on the other, it does make the fierce warrior woman awesome!

If you can get past the cussing and raunchiness, this is a good story. Really, I'm just slogging stubbornly through it now because I hate not finishing books!
