At end of chap 4, interesting info. on the intersection of women’s suffrage with black male suffrage. Women’s suffrage had been paused during Civil War. Women would have to cont. to wait as the normally progressive Rad. Repubs. of the era would not open minds to women.

Great historical info. The men in Congress known as the Radical Republicans had the best interests at heart for the nation and its a travesty that they did not prevail for the freed African Americans. They truly cared about equality. Also Andrew Johnson was a prejudiced President who had a few things in common with another certain prez. “Johnson declared that he, not Congress, represented the will of the people”
