“Being alone at your age isn’t healthy. I’d hate to think of what would happen if you were to blow your brains out. It’d hurt the resale value of the whole neighborhood.”
“I’m not depressed!”
She looked him up and down. “You aren’t? Why on earth not?”

No, not really. She's just the nosy old lady that lives next door. The book is actually very lighthearted. Here's the rest of the quote to add a little more context:“Is there anything else, Mrs. Klapper?” Linus asked through gritted teeth.
She waved a hand dismissively at him. “Fine, then. Go. Put on your pajamas and that old record player of yours and dance around the living room as you do.”
“I asked you to stop watching me through my window!”
Are you enjoying this? It looked fun, but I read two of his books and they were both so downer. The second one had a bunch of violent child abuse so now I'm leery of picking up anything else of his.
It was fun for a while, and all the children have terrific personalities, but, honestly, I've grown bored with it. It's too one-note (prejudice and racism are bad) and obvious for my tastes--the story arc is easy to predict right from the get-go.There's no real conflict, it's more about the protagonist finding himself and opening his heart to love. And I think it's also shelved wrong--it reads more like a children's book to me.
It looks and sounds like a kid's book. The one I read was billed as romance but was more like horror!
