I’ve also gone through and adjusted all my GoodReads ratings, leaving my 5-stars and removing ratings from the rest. I’ve realized recently how much GoodReads ratings can impact the sales of a book, and I don’t want a book not being my own personal new favourite to mean that it has a lower average rating, making others less likely to buy it.

I’m thinking about this especially since I’ve spent the last couple of years making a much more conscious effort to read Own Voices books by a diverse array of authors. I don’t want to negatively affect the sales of marginalized authors who are already fighting uphill battles just because of my own arbitrary preferences as a reader. So from now on, it’s 5-stars or it’s unrated, and that will continue to be the case with my future ratings over on The Story Graph. I hope to see some of you there!
