I think I've discovered where that horror-movie trope of bleeding from the eyes, ears, and/or nose came from. It was a common symptom of 1918 flu victims who were having a cytokine storm reaction to the virus. We might have forgotten where it originated, but it still invokes the kind of horror the people of 1918 experienced when they saw it in their gravely ill loved ones.
