The writing is rather juvenile, simple and repetitive. Lots of grinning, alighting from buggies, greeting, and endless descriptions of minor details. The supposed love stories are blatantly obvious from the first page but don't move along. The characters (plenty of them are towheaded, and the author never misses a chance to point it out) are bland and two-dimensional.

Too many unnecessary descriptions of food. The author annoyingly keeps slipping in "interesting" details about the Amish, like how they keep their food warm using Sterno. Why??
