This book is about Schubert's last song cycle, Die Winterreise, or the Winter's Journey. The songs are short but full of restrained emotion and very beautiful. Susan Youens describes the background to the poems and explains in detail each of the 24 songs. While it is helpful to have some knowledge of musical scores, there is much that will contribute to all listeners of Schubert's "most beautiful songs."
