These three books are those which, I suppose, cemented Levertov’s reputation in the USA. I’ve just finished the first of them, The Jacob’s Ladder (her second for New Directions), and you can see already in its poems aspects of what was called “deep image,” though this book came out in 1961, before Bly’s Silence in the Snowy Fields or Wright’s The Branch Will Not Break.
