I ordered more of his books on criticism. It is dense with references, bibliographies, translations, and even gossip. It is a fascinating teaching text but also a genuinely pleasing read should one have a casual interest in the classics of English, French and German literature.

This book is super helpful and insightful. I’m taking it in slowly, and reading out loud. It has helped explain a few things in modernism that I have found confusing, such as the classicism that characterizes modern thought. I did not read Agamemnon, nor do I speak Greek or Latin. It also helped that Shakespeare was discussed revealing a lot of criticism that I didn’t associate with French authors.
