This book both depresses me and makes me incredibly angry. What hope have we for fixing up our trashed and polluted world if we are merely waiting to be beamed up? The concept is naive and damaging. If one more person speaks to me of the Rapture or End Times being upon us, I think I'll punch them. Guess that excludes me from 'The Kingdom'. I'll take my chances on this one, exquisite and unique planet, called Earth.

"In addition to secular apocalyptic literature, secular organizations exist that warn of imminent apocalypse, such as DOOM: The Society for Secular Armageddonism... the organization has established a telephone "Hotline of Doom,"..."

"Reagan's interest in biblical prophecies about the last days and his relationships with Christian theologists who had expressed apocalyptic views...caused fearful speculation about the possibility of an apocalyptic religious coalition influencing foreign policy and initiating what they believed would be a divinely sanctioned nuclear war." Holy crap! The future of so many countries in the hands of religious madmen.

" the Love Family (known officially as the Church of Armageddon)..." Is it just me, or does anyone else have a problem with the contradictory titles?

This book is great! I am SO recommending it to anyone who is looking for some rationality in amongst the Doomsday madness. Great writing. Packed with solid footnotes. Love it.
