So far, I can't help noting that I liked the first half better than the second; I was disappointed that Cross's (Heilbrun's) alter go dismissed feminism; and the author/character Kate is wrong to dismiss Marshal McLuhan's Media is the Message. How we communicate, the media we rely on for information and truth IS the point.

It's still fascinating.

I finished Part 1, started chapter 6 (more than halfway), and no one has died. Nevertheless, I am loving this novel for the way it takes me back to college and university life in my time. I was a freshman at the U of Washington in 1970 when this book was first published. I recall being aware that "elite" private schools were quite different from my experience. In Psych 105, I was among the youngest. We were a mix.

My time, and yes she does seem stuffy about the student demonstrations—doesn't even mention the war. sigh

On the other hand, she could in these early pages be describing the University of Washington campus as I remember it, though she isn't, of course.
