"'We had a quarrel,' she said, the words blunt because she had to get them out quickly." (238) what 22 year old American (even in 2012) uses the word quarrel in an emotionally tense situation

"He was wondering why she hadn't called Jack to insist that he come home.

She'd have to. She knew that, but still she delayed, praying he'd come back on his own." (194) why. Why not just call. This is pointless drama that there is no explanation for elsewhere in the book

"Violet and Maddie would have the photo of their family to cherish...but it wouldn't include that telltale address." (175) creepy overbearing controlling ARGH

"Maddie might think she'd ended things between them, but she couldn't end his sense of responsibility for her." (48-49) well that's creepy AF. Gonna keep secretly researching her family behind her back like a champ

Everyone is accepting that they have a secret twin real easily. 41 large print pages in and Jack, Violet, and Maddie are like "yep clearly we are siblings and we're separated, all right"
